Tony Karam

Tony Karam, Ph.D. is a Laser Optics Product Line Manager in Edmund Optics’ Barrington, NJ, USA office where he has been working on the development and commercialization of optical elements and components for laser applications. Tony received his Ph.D. in Chemistry, Ultrafast Spectroscopy, and Nanotechnology from Louisiana State University. Following his graduate studies, he moved to the California Institute of Technology as a postdoctoral scholar at the Center for Ultrafast Science and Technology under the supervision of Nobel Laureate Ahmed Zewail. At Caltech, he worked on the development of ultrafast electron diffraction and microscopy for the investigation of lattice dynamics, correlated atomic motion, and structural transformation in atomically-thin materials and nanofilms. He is the author of over 40 publications on ultrafast lasers, material science, and photonics.


ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Development of state-of-the-art ultrafast electron diffraction and ultrafast electron microscopy techniques to image the atomic motion at the time scale of nuclear motion by combining the temporal resolution of femtosecond lasers with the spatial resolution of electrons
  • Unraveling the mechanism behind charge density waves and superconductivity in atomically-thin transition metal dichalcogenides based on strong electron−phonon coupling and lattice instabilities, which remained unknown for over three decades
  • Developing novel nonlinear optical spectroscopy techniques to in-situ probe the buried interfaces of semiconductor nanostructures and nanocomposites
  • Developing a novel nanomaterial composed of plasmonic core-multiple shell for applications in drug delivery (patent 9,821,061)
